  • Eden

Eden, Leakesville, Spray, DraperIn my younger years, Eden did not exist. There were 3 textile towns located in the north east corner of Rockingham County. There were known as Leakesville, Spray and Draper. In 1967, the 3 towns consolidated into one town and renamed themselves “EDEN”…..

The Smith and the Dan River join together on the south side of Eden. The Dan River flows along Eden’s southern border while the Smith River flows from the north bisecting the city on its route to meet the Dan River.

Eden is the largest city in Rockingham County with a population of approximately 15,000. As with most southern, formerly booming textile towns, Eden is fighting to hold its own in the ever changing world. The population seems to be relatively stable even though the textile industry is a fraction of it’s former self.

History of “The Land Of Eden”

By the mid-eighteenth century, the territory of present-day Eden was within a 70,000-acre (280 km2) estate owned by William Byrd II, a planter of Virginia and North Carolina. He originally called his estate “The Land of Eden”. This is taken from Wikipedia. Wikipedia tells of a very interesting history of the Town of Eden

  • Stokes County was formed in 1789 from Surry County. It was named for John Stokes, an American Revolutionary War captain severely wounded when British Colonel Banastre Tarleton’s cavalry practically destroyed Col. Abraham Buford’s Virginia regiment in the Waxhaws region in 1780. After the war, Captain Stokes was appointed a judge of the United States district court for North Carolina. In 1849 the southern half of Stokes County became Forsyth County. Read More At .. Wikipedia ..

  • The Dan River is a very important part of the makeup and history of Stokes County. Danbury, the county seat is obviously named after the river and Stokes County is where the Dan River makes its first entry into the state of North Carolina.
  • Stokes County is located in northwest North Carolina and is considered to be part of the Piedmont Plateau. The Sauratown Mountains rise from the southwest edge of the County, and run northeast for over half the width of the County.

The Sauratown Mountains were named for the Saura Indians, a tribe that inhabited this area during the second century.

  • Priddy’s General Store

Priddy’s is a journey you’ll never forget. Lulled by the peaceful setting it will get into your very being, often beckoning you back to visit a spell…

It’s all here, waiting for you to take a trip down memory lane, where old times are never forgotten. Priddy’s is where you can forget the mad rush; Where time stands still. Where you can slowly peruse the things of the past, letting your mouth water at the sight of homemade jams, jellies, baked goods, old fashioned candies..

    Priddy General Store 2
Priddy’s General Store has been an important part of the Danbury community for as long as most local old timers can remember. In 1888 the building was built by the Hartman Family, and in 1929 N.D. and Lula Priddy purchased the building and opened “N.D. Priddy Grocery”. Their son J. Elwood and his wife Pat took over the store in 1960. Since 1999 (after Elwood Priddy’s death) Jane Priddy Charleville manages the store for her mother, Pat. Jane is the 3rd generation Priddy to operate the store with continuing the old traditions and maintaining the rustic atmosphere.

They look forward to you stopping by and taking a step back in time and enjoy the good ole days.

Today, I had the opportunity to personally visit Priddy’s General Store. It was everything that write ups and verbal descriptions said it was and more. A couple of cousins and I were meeting in Danbury and decided since it was lunch time the Priddy’s store might be a good place to start. The staff prepared home made sandwiches and served cold drinks…..the kind in glass bottles and a knock off top…..Real sodas.

    Priddy General Store 3

My sandwich was honey mustard bread, a slice of bologna, a slice of American cheese and a slice of onion accompanied by an ice cold Dr. Pepper. The sandwich was custom made and…yes….I did order it just as described. The ambiance was great, the service was great and the food was great……..If you are in the Danbury area, I highly recommend a visit to Priddy’s General Store.

  • Hinnant Family Vineyard

Hinnant Family Vineyards Dan Valley Dot Com 1

This is a neat vineyard located in Pine Level, NC. Pine Level is about three miles east of Smithfield and about thirty miles east south east of Raleigh.

Hinnant tells me that they are the largest Muscadine vineyard in North Carolina. This may be accurate as they have seventy acres of muscadine grape vines under cultivation.

You can see the Hinnant Family Vineyards web page by clicking here.

The Muscadine grape is native to the southeastern United States. It is a cultivated vine but also grows wild across the region. Most family farms have one or two Muscadine vines growing near to the house and convenient for snacking. The Muscadine grape is very sweet and tasty, but has a thick skin.

Muscadine grapes are rich sources of polyphenols and other nutrients studied for their potential health benefits. Gallic acid, (+)-catechin and epicatechinar the major phenolsin seeds, while ellagic acid, myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol and trans-resveratrol are the major phenols in the skins.

    .

Now that we know that the Muscadine is a healthy food, we can get back to wine making.

Hinnant Family Vineyards has a tasting room. The tastings consist of sweet and semi-sweet wines. Also available is dry and semi-dry wines. There seems to be something for all taste preferences. Check the tasting room prices and schedules by clicking here .

My wife and I spent about two hours at the winery … tasting many wines and then sitting on the porch in a rocker sipping a full … and they did pour the glass full … glass of wine and generally relaxing. We both recommend that you visit Hinnant Family Vineyards.

For the ladies who like to shop … This winery is only a couple of miles from the Carolina Premium Outlets … also known as the Smithfield Outlet Stores.
